FAQ

Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about building, sharing, and enjoying a BranchLite Gather family tree.

Getting Started

What is BranchLite Gather?

BranchLite Gather is a collaborative family-tree experience that lets relatives build a visual family tree together from their own devices.

How is BranchLite different from BranchLite Gather?

BranchLite is the broader family of family-connection visualization tools. BranchLite Gather is the first BranchLite experience and is designed for families to build a tree together.

Do I need to download an app?

No. BranchLite Gather runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to download or install.

Do I need a BranchLite account?

Relatives who join a tree do not need to create an account. The Host starts and manages the tree.

Do I need genealogy experience?

No. BranchLite is designed to be easy enough for family members to contribute even if they have never built a family tree before.

How do I start a family tree?

Choose Get Started, begin your tree, and then share the invitation link or QR code with relatives you want to contribute.

Building the Tree Together

How do relatives join my tree?

Share the tree’s link or QR code. Relatives can open it on their phone, tablet, or computer and begin contributing.

Can more than one person edit the tree at the same time?

Yes. BranchLite Gather is designed so multiple relatives can add and update family information together.

What can relatives add?

Family members can add people, relationships, and photos to help build out their branch of the family.

Can I use nicknames instead of formal names?

Yes. BranchLite is meant to reflect how your family actually knows one another, so nicknames are welcome.

Can I add pets to the tree?

Yes. If a pet belongs in the family story, you can include them.

Can I add birthdates, death dates, or other genealogy dates?

BranchLite Gather currently focuses on names, relationships, photos, and family connections rather than detailed genealogy date fields.

Can family members join from different kinds of devices?

Yes. BranchLite Gather is browser-based and is designed to work across phones, tablets, and computers.

Privacy & Access

Who can see our family tree?

People you share the tree or invitation link with can access the collaborative tree. Treat your tree link or QR code like an invitation and share it only with people you want participating.

Can people who join edit the tree?

BranchLite Gather is collaborative, so participants who join can contribute and make changes to the shared tree. Only invite people you trust to participate.

Should I post my tree’s QR code publicly?

We recommend sharing the QR code or invitation link directly with the family members you want to participate rather than posting it broadly.

What information should I avoid adding?

Avoid entering highly sensitive personal information such as Social Security numbers, financial information, passwords, or other information that does not belong in a family tree.

How does BranchLite handle my information?

BranchLite handles information according to our Privacy Policy.

Printing, Sharing & Presenting

Can I download my finished tree?

Yes. BranchLite is designed so you can turn your completed tree into a downloadable visual you can keep and share.

Can I print my family tree?

Yes. The tree can be exported for printing, including a high-resolution format suitable for standard letter-size output.

Can I use BranchLite for a family history presentation?

Yes. BranchLite can serve as a visual reference while you tell family stories, explain relationships, or walk relatives through different branches. The offered PNG downloadable is perfect for this.

What is Presentation Mode?

Presentation Mode is a paid feature designed to make the family tree easier to display and share with a group.

Can I use BranchLite for something other than a reunion?

Absolutely. Families can use BranchLite for gatherings, family-history presentations, research collaboration, memorials, keepsakes, milestone celebrations, printable art, and other family-connection projects.

Pricing

Can I try BranchLite for free?

Yes. You can begin building a tree with up to 10 people at no cost.

What happens when my tree reaches 10 people?

Nothing disappears. Adding additional family members pauses until you unlock the tree by choosing a Tree Pass or other eligible plan.

What is a Tree Pass?

A Tree Pass is a one-time purchase that unlocks one tree beyond the free 10-person limit. No subscription is required for that tree.

Do my relatives have to pay to contribute?

No. Invited relatives do not need to purchase their own plan simply to contribute to a Host’s tree.

What is BranchLite Plus?

BranchLite Plus is intended for Family Champions who create and host multiple personal family trees. Plus includes unlimited personal trees while subscribed and additional Plus features.

Are premium templates included?

Premium templates are planned as a Plus benefit. One-time Tree Pass users may be able to purchase premium templates separately as they become available.

Genealogy & Compatibility

Does BranchLite replace Ancestry, FamilySearch, or genealogy software?

No. BranchLite serves a different purpose. It focuses on visualizing family connections and helping relatives collaborate rather than replacing full genealogy research platforms.

Can BranchLite research historical records for me?

No. BranchLite Gather is not a genealogy-record search service. It can help relatives build and review family connections together before or alongside deeper genealogy research.

Can I import a GEDCOM file?

GEDCOM import is not currently part of BranchLite Gather.

Do I need an internet connection?

Yes. Because relatives collaborate through the web, an internet connection is required while using BranchLite Gather.
